The future has a way of arriving unannounced - George Will

Unfortunately I ended up missing out on the Darklight Symposium on Friday. Dr Anne O’Connor, special advisor to the Director General of RTE, was at hand to discuss perspectives for public broadcasting in Ireland and online policies for RTE. Thankfully I got to catch up with what was said on the Darklight Symposium blog.

During the Q&A session, Dr O’Connor was asked why the RTE was so bad (not something I am entirely in agreement with.) She revealed that under legislation the organistion cannot spend public or commercial money on the site, so they have to fund it through advertising basically. That’s food for thought next time someone wants to criticise their online strategy.

RTE are among the most forward thinking of Irish media organisations and lets hope that they are the first to move to take advantage of iTunes 6 and the impending video revolution. With so much archive footage at their disposal, they are in the perfect position to provide vast resources to promote Irish culture across the globe.

Podcasting starts next month on RTE apparently according to what was said during Dr Anne O’Connor’s discussion.

The Irish Times and other media organisations also have to rely on advertising revenue to fund their site (in fact their whole business), so I don’t believe that’s an excuse for having a poor site.
